Meet Vanessa, who wants to raise awareness of multi-potentiality

Today we meet Vanessa, from Misouri USA. She was always very annoyed when people were asking her “What do you want to do when you’re grown up?”, until she found out she’s a multi-potentialite.

 

 

I met Vanessa via Twitter. We started to chat and found out that we actually have a lot in common: We are both multi-potentialites, we both have a website for multi-potentialites and we both love being creative. So we went on Skype, and we talked for more than an hour and I had the feeling that we could be talking forever about so many things.

Vanessa and multi-potentiality

Hi Vanessa, thank you for doing this interview. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

Sure, my name is Vanessa Adelman. I am from Misouri, that’s in the Midwest – USA.

I love any form of art, whether I am creating it, or enjoying it. Music, painting, drawing, movies, oh! And Disney! I grew up loving Disney and Dreamworks movies.

 

 

I also love hunting, photography, and travel. I have such a hunger to travel lately. My bucket list is a composition book full of odd, beautiful places that I want to visit, and awesome things that not many people get to do. That includes learning to fly a modern fighter jet, but it would be extremely difficult to get my hands on one without going into the Air Force.

I also raise awareness of multi-potentiality through my YouTube channel, Twitter account, Facebook profile and page, and website, and I love keeping up with that, too. It’s a rewarding challenge. I am also working on my first product and it will be ready for sale in a year to a year and a half.

How exciting! What will that first product be?

My vision is to compile a list of people who are experts in their
field, interviewing them on their expertise, their stories, and how they
make money, and stringing those interviews together in an ebook or pdf file.

My mission is to give people an outline to finding their own
niche, and paving their own path to success. Then, after I have sold
some, I will add my story to how I made my first dollar through my
website. I will include great tips, ways to save money and probably some shortcuts, too.

That’s brilliant! Looking forward to that, I’ll be your first customer 🙂 Tell me, when and how did you find out you’re a multi-potentialite?

Growing up, I never really knew what I wanted to be. I would spit out answers I thought adults wanted to hear, or I thought they would approve of. I would constantly switch my answers back and forth, and to a new career.

There was never really one that stuck very well, and I was so unsure of myself when people would ask me what I was going to be when I grew up. This spread to my personal life. It only got worse as I got older.

People would tell me I have plenty of time to figure it out, but I still felt the pressure. The time gap was closing, and I began telling people I didn’t know what I wanted.

About seven months ago, a few weeks before I began my website, I was finally fed up and sick of the constant switching up of my career decision and telling people, “I don’t know.” I literally began Googling, “what to do when you want to do everything.”

As I scraped the search engine for a lead, I found a website called, Trailblazers. I was reading Johnathan Mead‘s website, and got very excited, when I came to Emilie Wapnick’s name, and Googled her. I found her TED talk, and I broke down in tears.

The road to success… and the roadblocks

Oh dear, that moment is really very special! I remember when I found out, my whole past finally started making sense. But, tell me, what have been your biggest successes?

My relationship with my boyfriend of three years is my biggest success. He is my best friend, and I couldn’t ask for a better one. Besides that, finding out I am a multi-potentialite, setting up my website, Facebook and Twitter accounts, and YouTube channel, and keeping up with them are big successes.

 

 

I also got into painting about a year ago, and that was a huge step in developing my creativity. I will graduate with my Associate’s degree next semester, and I plan to get my Bachelor’s degree in something with wildlife, with minors in art and outdoor adventure leadership, and maybe a couple others.

I already have two years worth of classes in Auto Collision Repair and Technology. That’s the thing about being a multi-potentialite. I don’t have one huge success. I am a “jill of all trades.” I have a bunch of smaller successes, skills, and experiences, and they are all very different. To me, that makes life much more interesting than just being excellent at one area.

And what were or are your biggest struggles or roadblocks, being a multi-potentialite?

I am easily distracted, just ask my boyfriend. When I see something I want to do, I want to do it ASAP. If I don’t do it right then, it gets put on a list or the back of my mind.

Then, it either gets lost in my subconscious, gets lost on paper, gets thrown away, or it takes me a long time to get to it, and actually do it. It seems like I don’t have much time for everything I want to get done or do, and me being easily distracted doesn’t help.

Believe me, I know what you’re talking about! Do you have a solution for it? How do you get around this roadblock?

I recognize the distraction, then write down what I want or need to do. Then, I go back, and focus on the task(s) at hand. If I am being distracted by a TV show or person, I leave the room or tune the person out.

As far as doing things on my bucket list, I am considering doing “bucket list runs” on my YouTube channel, where I randomly choose one or a few things on my bucket list and do them, then post the video on YouTube.

Tips for other multi-potentialites

What a good idea, these bucket list runs! Is there any resource you can give us that made a big impact on your life and that could also help other multi-potentialites?

Obviously, if it weren’t for Johnathan Mead and Emilie Wapnick, I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have in such a short amount of time. They have pointed me in the right direction, and that is priceless.

 

 

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Movie Maker, as a team, have helped me express myself in a way that I wasn’t sure still existed. There is a major piece of me that I thought I lost somewhere in all the noise, but now I know it’s still there, and all I want to do is fly with it.

If you could give us just one advice, what would be this one and best advice you can give other multi-potentialites?

Trust your gut. If people are telling you something, but your instincts say another, put a piece of trust in YOU.

If you believe there is another, better way, ask yourself, “What is the worst that can happen?” If you do that, and have patience in your decisions, you will not only soar, but you will love the ride, too.
